Back to School on Sep 2: Free Transit and Safety Reminder

Students and families are encouraged to kick off the school year by taking the bus on Wednesday, September 2. All public transit will be free on Wednesday, including Access Transit for those who qualify. Public transit is available each weekday starting at 6:45 a.m. and routes are available throughout the city to help you get to school, work, or after-class activities.

“The free transit day helps students get to school, purchase their passes, and get familiar with their routes,” says Charlene Tebbutt, Community Mobility Coordinator for the City of Prince Albert. “We also encourage students to print their names on their bus passes as Transit operators may request government-issued photo identification to confirm ownership of a pass. Clearly identifying your pass may also help it be returned if it is lost and turned in.”

High school students can purchase monthly bus passes at École St. Mary, Carlton Comprehensive, Wesmor, and Prince Albert Collegiate Institute. Semester Bus Passes and monthly passes are available for post-secondary students at City Hall. Students attending Saskatchewan Polytechnic can also purchase a bus pass on site at their school’s technical building. Post-secondary students must present photo ID and proof of enrollment in an accredited school to qualify for a post-secondary or semester bus pass.

School Zone Safety
As a new school term begins, drivers are reminded that school zones are back in effect across the city. Drivers must slow to 30 km/h in school zones.

“The start of a new school year should come with an awareness of increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic in specific school zones,” said Chief Patrick Nogier. “Our officers will be visible and will enforce traffic laws as we work to keep our students, pedestrians, and other road users safe. We are reminding drivers to slow down and observe the 30 km/h speed limit in school zones, obey traffic signs, watch for children and pedestrians, and avoid distractions while driving. Keeping our children safe is a shared responsibility, and we all have a role to play in ensuring everyone’s safety.”

Additionally, drivers are reminded:

• U-turns in school zones are prohibited.
• Watch for pedestrians and stop at all marked crosswalks.
• Do not stop in no-parking or no-stopping zones, which are in place to maintain sightlines.

Pay Online for Parking
The City has introduced mobile payment options for all City-owned parking lots, including downtown and at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Park and pay using the PaybyPhone app and extend your time as needed online.
