Tebey, is a platinum selling artist, award winning producer and accomplished songwriter with six #1 songs in his repertoire of hits. His much-mispronounced name (read: TAY-bay) is of Nigerian descent – his father’s birthplace, but Tebey grew up in Ontario. Though he’s been experiencing solid highlights for over a decade, the past three years have seen some of Tebey’s biggest successes with three #1 songs as a writer: a US Billboard #1 with Justin Moore’s “SOMEBODY ELSE WILL”; a Canadian #1 with Gord Bamford’s “DIVE BAR” and his first #1 as an artist and writer with his GOLD single “WHO’S GONNA LOVE YOU”, for which he also received a SOCAN award in March 2019. He also co-wrote two additional top 5 radio hits during this timeframe - “DENIM ON DENIM” (certified Platinum) and “GOOD JEANS”. Joining Tebey for this performance will be Calgary’s trio Nice Horse! Family Ties
Belinda Harrow, Jennifer McRorie, Elizabeth Munro, Wendy Winter
toured through OSAC’s Arts on the Move program, curated by Zoë Schneider. Family Ties explores familial bonds through the medium of embroidery. Halifax based artist Elizabeth Munro creates embroidered and surface manipulated non-objective ‘portraits’ of her parents that include audio elements to convey impressions of her parents from childhood; providing a nuanced concept of a portrait filtered through the subjective experience of one person’s memory. Regina based artist Belinda Harrow reproduces photographs of her maternal grandmother at different ages into embroideries. Floating within the outlines of the human figure are colourful depictions of animals. The outlines of the humans are black thread on a cream felt background while the animals are vibrantly hued. Moose Jaw based artist Jennifer McRorie reimagines her daughters’ drawings in ‘whitework’; a type of embroidery where the colour of embroidery threads are the same colour as the fabric on which they are embroidered. The artists in this exhibition use embroidery in different ways to consider the complexities of the bonds with our families.
