Members of City Council will meet for Budget Committee deliberations on January 6 and 7 , 2021 where they will consider Administration's proposed 2021 operating and capital budgets. The proposed budget includes a recommended 6.6% increase to fund City operations in the coming year.
The budget includes a projected shortfall of $2.14 million due to Covid-19 related expenses and revenue losses heading into 2021, but these losses are entirely offset by funding through the Provincial Municipal Economic Enhancement Program and the Federal Government Safe Restart Program.
“We applied the funding in a way that sets us up with a surplus going into 2021,” said Cheryl Tkachuk, Finance Director for the City of Prince Albert. “Fortunately, this means that Covid-19 losses will have no impact on property taxes.”
The Budget Committee will meet to consider the proposed budget and review each operational area to make final determinations on spending priorities for the year and make recommendations to City Council for final approval.
“We have another ambitious year ahead of us,” said Jim Toye, City Manager for the City of Prince Albert. “The proposed budget will allow us to continue investing in Prince Albert to not just maintain but improve our roads, facilities and playgrounds.”
Notable proposed projects for 2021 include:
- $554,000 for an outdoor fitness park at the Alfred Jenkins Field House
- $800,000 for the rotary club adventure park at Little Red River Park
- $4.235 million for the paving program
- $300,000 for sidewalk and curb rehabilitation
- $550,000 for pedestrian bridge replacements
- $130,000 for playground replacements
