The City’s snow plowing crews have been working through residential areas since last week with the Midtown, Riverview, East Flat, Crescent Heights, East Hill (north of 28th St) and West Hill neighbourhoods expected to be finished today. Crews are also targeting key arterial streets to clean-up ridges left behind when the streets were originally opened up.
The schedule for the remaining residential areas is:
- Crescent Acres Thursday, Dec 2
- Carlton park Monday December 6
- West View Tuesday December 7
- The remainder of East Hill and Southwood Wednesday , December 8
- Hazeldell and Nordale Thursday December 9
Garbage and recycling schedules are considered when determining what neighborhoods to target first to avoid clearing around curbside bins.
While crews work through residential areas, residents are encouraged to take note of the following:
Ticketing and Towing: In order to ensure snow is plowed effectively and efficiently, it is essential that parked cars are moved from the street prior to graders coming through. No parking signs are put up in the neighbourhood at least 12 hours in advance of crews coming to plow snow. Parked cars that remain on the street after 12 hours risk fines and towing. Fines are $100 ($50 if paid early). Towing charges are additional.
Banks of snow along the curbs (windrows) are a necessary part of the process. Except in identified areas like 2nd avenue west, downtown, etc. snow is not trucked away.
Driveways Every effort is made to ensure that windrows are not left on driveways. If a windrow is greater than 12 inches, crews will return to have it removed. You need to call 953-4900 to report it. Please note that a loader follows the grader operator to remove windrows. Please allow some time before reporting to issue to ensure the second operator has time to clear the driveway.
Cul-de-sacs - Snow is often piled in the centre of a cul-de-sac or in the middle of a main street to allow for timely clearing of driving lanes. Crews will return at a later time to truck out the snow.
Sidewalks - Under certain conditions, where there is a greater volume of snow, one third of the sidewalk may be used for snow plowing operations. In these cases, property owners would be responsible for clearing the remaining two-thirds of the sidewalk.
