Prince Albert, Sk. – Prince Albert philanthropist Malcolm Jenkins is celebrating his 30th year of owning the Canadian Tire store in the city by providing funding to the City of Prince Albert to assist in the expansion and upgrading of some recreation facilities. His assistance will provide an expansion to the new playground at the Alfred Jenkins Field House, a much-needed upgrade to the Lions Park Spray Park by the Bernice Sayese Centre, and the installation of an indoor batting cage in the gymnasium at the Field House.
Canadian Tire Jumpstart Playground Expansion
Jenkins was the driving force behind the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Inclusive Playground at the Alfred Jenkins Field House that opened in June 2019. Feedback has been extremely positive as the playground was busy at most times. Some feedback indicated a lack of play components that would offer a broader range of activities for any child or person regardless of their ability. Jenkins has recommended, and will mostly fund, a 7,000 square foot expansion to the west and north of the original structure.
The new elements will include swings, a spinner, 2 crab trap apparatus for climbing, global motion, a large Netplex structure and a we-go-round. The surfacing will be the red rubberized material identical to the original playground.
This expansion will make the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Playground at the Alfred Jenkins Field House over 17,000 square feet, one of the largest playgrounds in Western Canada. Construction will begin in the spring and be complete by early summer.
Lions Park (Bernice Sayese Centre) Spray Park Upgrade
The spray park in Lions Park, adjacent to the Bernice Sayese Centre, was one of the first constructed in the City in 2007 and contains two features. Jenkins again will provide a significant portion of the funding to upgrade this facility this spring. The renovated park will include six new interactive elements including a water tower and splash ball and three ground-spray features and be inclusive. The pad will be expanded and painted Canadian Tire red. This project will begin in the spring and be ready this summer.
Indoor Batting Cage
Another element identified to Jenkins that groups have requested is an indoor batting cage. Jenkins will fund a retractable 30’ wide X 75’ long battling cage that will be installed in the NLCDC Gymnasium at the Alfred Jenkins Field House. This cage, which will have two hitting lanes, will be suspended from the ceiling to be raised and lowered for use.
This will provide a much-needed facility for cricket, baseball and softball players and teams. This batting cage will be installed by the fall.
