The City of Prince Albert is proud to announce a generous $25,000 donation from the Schrader family to the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre. In recognition of this contribution, Officials Room #1 in the new twin arenas will be named in honour of Barry Schrader—a man whose name is synonymous with officiating excellence in Saskatchewan.

When you think of refereeing in Saskatchewan, one name stands above the rest—Barry Schrader. A dual Hall of Fame inductee, both as a team member and an individual, Barry has devoted more than 7,000 games and over four decades to officiating and mentoring in Prince Albert and across the province.

Twice recognized as the “Most Deserving Official” (1993 and 2012), Barry has served as Referee-in-Chief for Prince Albert Minor Hockey for many years. His influence spans generations—his son Bob followed in his footsteps, officiating at all levels, including the WHL. Today, Barry’s legacy continues through his five grandchildren, who now referee hockey, with one recently attending a WHL camp.

Barry has also been instrumental in advancing female officiating in Saskatchewan. Several women have achieved national and international success through his mentorship, including appearances at the Olympic Games. His commitment to excellence, inclusion, and mentorship has shaped the careers of countless officials across the province.

“Barry’s lifelong dedication to the sport and his mentorship of others has made an extraordinary impact,” said Dawn Kilmer, City Councillor. “The Schrader family donation and naming of the Officials’ room is a perfect fit for this family’s legacy.”

The Barry Schrader Officials Room will be a lasting tribute to his contribution to the game and the generations of referees he has inspired. The naming recognition will remain in place for at least 10 years.

The City of Prince Albert extends heartfelt thanks to the Schrader family for supporting the Play it Forward Campaign, which is helping bring the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre—a $117 million state-of-the-art recreation facility—to life.
