The City of Prince Albert offers heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and community of Chief Lawrence Joseph, who passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at the age of 79. Chief Joseph made history as the first Indigenous Alderman for the City of Prince Albert and also served as a Public School Board Trustee. He served two terms as City Councillor and Acting Mayor in 1993.
Chief Joseph, a proud member of Big River First Nation and residential school survivor, dedicated his life to advocacy, leadership, and public service. He served as Chief, Vice-Chief, and later Lifetime Chief of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN).
His career included 30 years of federal service, military service in the Canadian Armed Forces, and a strong commitment to community leadership. He was awarded the Governor General’s medal for public service and an Honorary Doctorate of Canon Law from Emmanuel College.
Beyond his public service, Chief Joseph was a gifted musician who shared his passion generously across the province, earning the inaugural Willard Ahenakew Lifetime Achievement Award from the Saskatchewan Indigenous Music Association.
"Chief Lawrence Joseph dedicated his life to service, and his presence will be deeply missed," said Mayor Bill Powalinsky. "Today, we will honour him with a minute of silence at the Executive Committee Regular Meeting."
Chief Joseph’s unwavering commitment to Treaty rights, education, and community will continue to inspire future generations.
