A successful recycling program is the best way to reduce waste and add years to the lifespan of an existing landfill, saving taxpayers millions of dollars in the creation of a new landfill.
Prince Albert currently diverts 24% of waste from the landfill through existing recycling efforts but we can do more with the help of our residents and businesses. The first step is to stop placing recyclable items into the garbage can. A few simple changes can mean a big difference.
Recycling in the Blue Bins
It is important that you only place recyclable materials in the blue bin. Bins that are contaminated with garbage often must be sent to the landfill. Be sure to check out the Easy Guide to Recycling to find out what should and shouldn't go in your blue bin.
Please note: Face masks CANNOT be recycled. Do not put face masks in your blue bin.
Blue Bin Contamination
Blue recycling bins are NOT for garbage. Garbage in a blue bin contaminates the entire load, sending all the recyclables to the landfill. If you are found to include garbage in your blue bin, it will be tagged to let you know of the violation. If your bin is tagged three times, your blue bin will be removed.
There are four recycle bin centre locations in the City that can be used for surplus, residential recycling. Remember that ALL cardboard must be collapsed and if bins are full, come back another day to drop off. Recycling should not be dropped off outside the bins.

Batteries can be dropped off at the Prince Albert Landfill. The following items can be brought free of charge:
Alkaline
Dry Cell Batteries
Lithium ion
Mercury silver oxide
Metal button batteries
Nickel cadmium single-use and rechargeable
Nickel hydride
Wet Cell Lead Acid Batteries (includes only vehicle batteries)
AA, AAA and D batteries can be brought to City Hall and are collected on the 1st floor near the north doors. This is an opportunity for the City to keep batteries from entering the landfill and is a long-term benefit as it reduces the quantity of leachable heavy metals that could result in a negative environmental impact.
