No fire ban is currently in effect within the City of Prince Albert. With summer in full swing, the Fire Department reminds residents to follow fire safety rules when using backyard fire pits, chimineas, and barbecues. These rules are in place to protect property, reduce nuisance smoke, and prevent the risk of fire in residential areas. Non-compliance with the bylaw may lead to a fine.
Residents may enjoy backyard fires only if all safety conditions are met:
- Fires must be in a non-combustible fire pit (metal, brick, or cement) no larger than 30" wide and 20" high.
- Must have a metal screen with holes no larger than 0.5" (13mm).
- Must be placed at least 2 metres away from any structure, deck, fence, or combustible material.
- Only seasoned wood or charcoal is allowed. Burning garbage, painted wood, plastics, or any material that creates offensive smoke or odour is prohibited.
- Flames must not exceed 1 metre in width, and fires must always be supervised with a way to extinguish them nearby.
- Fires are not allowed in windy conditions or if they create a nuisance (e.g., smoke affecting neighbours).
Chimineas & Portable Fire Pits
- Not allowed on wooden decks or apartment balconies.
- Must be used on a non-combustible surface (like concrete) and placed 2 metres from buildings or flammable materials.
- Must not be under overhangs like trees, roofs, or awnings.
- Cannot be used in enclosed areas due to the risk of carbon monoxide.
- The Fire Department may require removal if deemed unsafe.
Wood Pile Storage
- Wood must be stacked away from doors, windows, and ignition sources.
- Must be stored at least 3 metres from any structure (except sheds).
- Only one cord of wood may be stored inside a building.
- The Fire Department may require removal if it’s a fire hazard.
Barbecues, Propane and Patio Heaters
- Must be used safely and responsibly, away from flammable materials.
- Never leave them unattended while lit.
- Keep in good working condition and follow federal/provincial propane regulations.
Balcony Use (Apartments/Condos):
- No solid fuel barbecues allowed.
- Propane tanks must be:
- 20 lbs or smaller, stored outside the building.
- Turned off when not in use.
- Upright and secured at all times.
