The City of Prince Albert is pleased to learn that the revised application for a new Aquatic and Arenas Recreation Centre has been approved by the Federal Government through the Canada Infrastructure Program. Prince Albert has been approved for $44 million of the $60 million project which includes $24 million from the Federal Government, nearly $20 million from the provincial government and the remainder from the City of Prince Albert. The approved project includes two 68,000 sq ft hockey rinks and a 47,000 sq ft indoor aquatic centre.
The original application was denied because it included a new arena for the Prince Albert Raiders, which was considered a semi-professional sporting franchise.
“Although there was some disagreement over what is considered a semi-professional team, once we heard the decision, we focused on resubmitting our revised application in a timely manner,” said Jim Toye, City Manager for the City of Prince Albert.
A new arena that meets the requirements of the Western Hockey League for the Prince Albert Raiders is still under consideration by the City of Prince Albert. “We know there is a need for a new facility and this will be part of the conversation as we develop plans for the new build,” said Prince Albert’s Deputy Mayor Don Cody. “Ultimately our application was successful and we are very pleased that Prince Albert and area will benefit from this kind of funding.”
The estimated construction cost of the facility that was in the original application, which included the arena for the Raiders, is $120 million.
