South Hill Cemetery


South Hill Cemetery is the only City-owned resting place. Located at 135 Marquis Road West, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Interment options include burials for both full-casket and cremated remains.

The specific locations of a gravesite can be found by contacting the Parks, Recreation and Culture Administration Office, at City Hall directly. General locations of gravesite sections can be found on the cemetery map.

Hours of Operation

The Cemetery is open seven days a week; however, as per the Recreation Facilities and Parks Bylaw, the grounds are closed to all visitors and foot traffic between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.  Staff will only be available on-site during regular business hours.

While in the cemetery please remember:

  • Children under 12 need to be accompanied by an adult.
  • Vehicles must keep to the roadways and not travel at a speed greater than 20 km/hr.
  • Pets and animals, except for service animals, are not allowed in the cemetery.
  • Be respectful of in progress burials. Make sure to give staff, equipment, funeral homes and families their space.

The Cemetery Fees are part of the Cemetery Regulations which are approved as part of the Cemetery Bylaw and are subject to change. These fees apply to the South Hill Cemetery only and do not include any Goods and Services Tax (GST) that may apply.

*Overtime is charged for any interment after 4:30 p.m. on Monday to Friday AND any interment on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays that is longer than 2 hours.

The rates listed above do not include any Goods and Services Tax (GST) that may apply.

You have burial choices for both traditional and cremated remains, as well as deepened plots beyond two metres in depth. You can book both full-service burials and private family graveside burials in the cemetery. You need to book your interment plans In Person or over the Phone with the Parks, Recreation and Culture Office. We do not accept interment bookings by Fax or Email.

We require the following with every interment booking:

  • A death, cremation or burial certificate for the deceased
  • Next of Kin Form completed
  • Permission from the legal plot owner to use the plot (if required)
  • Proof of welfare status (if required)

All funeral processions will be under the control and supervision of the Cemetery Supervisor while within the Cemetery.

Please note:

  • 48-hours' notice (16 business hours) is required for winter interments
  • 24-hours' notice (8 business hours) is required for summer interments

Only one casket per grave unless the grave is deepened beyond two metres. A maximum of four interments can be made in a plot except for children's sections where only three burials are allowed:

  • Two traditional burials plus two cremated remains in a deepened plot; or
  • One traditional burial plus three cremated remains; or
  • Four cremated remains.

The cemetery offers the following sections:

  • Roman Catholic
  • Ukrainian Greek Orthodox
  • Ukrainian Greek Catholic - Only members of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Parish of St. George's Church and their family members can get a license for a plot in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Section.
  • Hebrew - Only people of the Hebrew community can get a license for a plot in the Hebrew Section.
  • Muslim - Only people of the Muslim community and their family can get a license for a plot in the Muslim Section.
  • Protestant
  • Children's and Stillborn/Infant
  • General
  • Veteran - Spouses can be interred in the Veteran's Section in the same plot as long as the Veterans interment happened first
  • Old City Cemetery
  • Old Presbyterian
  • Free Ground, Indigent and Common - Indigent plots are provided free of charge by the City of Prince Albert if all funeral costs are being paid by the Ministry of Social Services, including interment fees (these fees will be GST exempt). Only immediate family members covered by Social Services can be interred into an occupied indigent plot.

Occupied Plots - Anyone requesting the use of an already occupied plot will need to provide the City with permission from the legal plot owner before the interment takes place. Only immediate family members can be interred into an occupied children's or indigent plot.

The South Hill Cemetery also has the following designated sections:

  • Cremations
  • Flat Markers
  • Field of Honor (Veteran's Sections)
  • Columbaria Niches

Artificial flowers, decorations, wreaths or natural flowers that are secured in an unbreakable vase or bound with metal wire are permitted on plots from November 1 to April 1,
but are not permitted at any other time except for the purpose of burial ceremonies.

Flowers and decorations for interments are allowed for seven days after the interment. After seven days, the Cemetery Supervisor will remove all flowers, wreaths, decoration and/or memorials.

Cemetery staff will pick up and dispose of any items placed in the cemetery starting in spring up until October 1 each year.

In-ground vases are to be turned down by October 1 of each year.

We do not permit borders, fences, railings, trellises, copings, hedges, enclosing objects and shrines.

Any artificial flowers, potted plants, perennials, lawn-edging, non-natural/such items, which includes but are not limited to the following: solar lights, chimes, rocks, stepping stones or other decorative items are considered temporary and are removed and disposed of weekly by the City.

Conditions

Year round, the Cemetery Supervisor will remove any weeds, wilted flowers, floral pieces, articles or things that are considered unsightly.

Anything that is an obstacle to convenient and safe mowing of the grass, snow removal and/or cemetery maintenance will also be removed.

All items placed in the Cemetery by the public shall be at their own risk. The City accepts no responsibility for any damaged or missing items.

We reserve the right to plant all perennial flowers, shrubs and trees. Please do not plant anything in the cemetery without permission.

Please fill out a Monument Permit for every marker installation or removal. 

Niche plate engraving or additional engraving of a name or date on an existing monument does not require a permit but the engraving must meet any cemetery regulations.

You can send your application through a monument company or by contacting the Parks, Recreation and Culture's Administration Department directly. Installers cannot complete any work until we approve this permit and receive payment.

We allow the following monument types in the South Hill Cemetery:

  • Flat markers
  • Upright markers
  • Pillow markers
  • Veteran's markers
  • Children's markers
  • Foot markers

Specifications and Conditions

Who

  • Applicants will be responsible for choosing the type, style and size of the monument. However, it must meet regulations.
  • For common plots, the applicant must provide equal space for the names of all individuals interred in the plot. They will also be responsible for paying all fees associated with an indigent plot monument permit.
  • We do not provide monuments installations except for in the Veteran's Section.  All installations, removals, engraving, and adjustments are to be done by a contractor that has experience with working with monuments.
  • We accept no responsibility for any monument work done prior to the approval of the permit.
  • The Cemetery Foreman inspects each installation and reserves the right to remove any monument where the install does not meet City regulations.

What

All monuments must meet City Regulations. Some of the important specifications include these four items:

  • Only one monument and one foot market are allowed per plot except for the Veteran's Section where foot markers are not permitted.
  • Monuments must be made of imperishable and adamant materials.
  • Marble, limestone, metal and concrete monuments are not permitted.
  • Grave covers are not allowed.
  • Decorations, monuments, vases and items constructed of plastic, glass, perishable or easily damaged materials are prohibited.
  • The marking of graves is optional except for Veterans' plots.

When

  • Monument installations are done seasonally from May 1 to October 1.
  • Gravesites must be suitably landscaped before monument installation can take place.
  • Installers should contact the South Hill Cemetery Office directly to set up an installation day and time.

Veteran monuments

  • The Parks, Recreation and Culture Office orders all Veteran's monuments through their current supplier. The only exception is when Last Post Fund is covering the cost of the stone. Suppliers may contact families of the deceased to confirm Veteran information. Additional flat bronze markers no larger than eight inches wide by fourteen inches long will be allowed on the foundation of a Veteran's monument.
  • The marking of graves is not optional for Veterans' plots.

Monuments are placed in the cemetery at the owner's risk. The City of Prince Albert assumes no responsibility for damage or loss due to vandalism, weather wear, Acts of God, or deterioration (except for damage found to be caused by City staff operations.)
