Access to Information

Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy

The Local Authority Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (LAFOIP) is a provincial Act that aims to strike a balance between the public's right to know and an individual's right to privacy.

The City of Prince Albert is a local authority and strives to operate in an open and transparent manner providing individuals with access to records in the possession or control of the City with limited and specific exceptions.

Examples of records that may require an Access to Information Request include:

  • Statistical information
  • Historical master plans
  • Confidential and/or personal information
  • Information that is not readily available on the City's website
  • Historical reports to City Council or a Committee of Council

LAFOIP also requires the City to protect the personal privacy of the people whose information we have. It tells us how to collect, store, and use your personal information, and who we can give it to. It also lets you correct your own personal information if you think we have it wrong in our records.

The majority of information held by the City of Prince Albert can be accessed through the normal release of information by staff, without using the Act.

Examples include:

  • answers to questions related to departmental operations
  • open agendas and minutes
  • bylaws
  • publications
  • historical property searches
  • policies and procedures

Submit the online Access to Information Form clearly outlining your request.  You will be contacted within 48 hours for follow-up or for any additional information that may be required to process your request.

Fees may apply, as outlined in the attachment of the City's Access to Information Policy

A formal request for recorded information is a process to access records that are not routinely available.  Unlike routine requests, the formal request must be made using the following method including the payment of $20 to the City of Prince Albert.

Complete the Access to Information Request Form and submit Form to the City Clerk's Office either by:

Mail: Access to Information, City Clerk's Office, 1084 Central Avenue, Prince Albert, SK S6V 7P3
Email or Hand delivered to City Hall

Responding to the request will begin on the date it is received in our office with the $20 payment.

We have thirty (30) days to respond. If requests involve a large number of records, an extensive search, or consultation with an external third party, the time may be extended. You will be advised of a time extension.

Additional fees may apply as per LAFOIP if your request involves a great deal of staff time in order to complete, or produces a large number of documents.

Law enforcement or other levels of Government may request The City to disclose personal information for the purpose of administering or enforcing any law or carrying out a lawful investigation.

Law enforcement and other levels of Government must fill out the Government Disclosure Request Form or Law Enforcement Request Form and provide to the City Clerk's Office by:

Mail: 1084 Central Avenue, Prince Albert, SK S6V 7P3, or email
