With melting snow revealing dirty, dusty streets, the City would like to advise that street sweeping operations have started in targeted areas where conditions allow for it. Full operations will begin in late April or early May once snow melts completely and streets dry up.
"Freezing temperatures cause ice buildup in the gutters which prevents a thorough cleaning," said Brent Kennedy, Roadways Manager for the City. "Once we have consistent warmer temperatures and the streets dry up thoroughly we can get full operations underway."
Street sweeping is done each year to clean City streets by removing sand and debris left behind from the winter. This work helps to prevent the material from going into the City's storm sewer system, reduces dust and makes streets safer for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
Street sweeping follows the same priority order as snow clearing operations starting with main arterials first, followed by bus routes, schools zones, the downtown and then residential streets.
