Snow operations crews will start with residential street grading on Monday, Feb 27th, 2023. If weather permits, residential grading should take about two weeks.
Road Operations Map: Carlton Park and parts of Crescent Acres (south of Olive Diefenbaker) will be first on the list. You can see when your neighbourhood is due for grading on the Road Operations Map here: bit.ly/3xO5FiT. The map will be updated daily.
The legend on the map is as follows:
- Purple is a future date.
- Red is the current date.
- Green means grading is finished.
Streets will be signed, and we want to remind residents to move their vehicles when they see the no parking signs. Vehicles will be ticketed. Snow grading will start at 8 a.m.
When determining what neighbourhoods to target, garbage and recycling schedules are considered first to avoid clearing around curbside bins.
While crews work through residential areas, residents are encouraged to take note of the following:
- Ticketing: Parked cars must be moved from the street before graders come through to ensure snow is plowed effectively and efficiently. No parking signs are put up in the neighbourhood at least 12 hours before crews come to plow snow. Parked cars on the street after 12 hours risk fines. Fines are $100 ($50 if paid early).
- Windrows: Banks of snow along the curbs (windrows) are a necessary part of the process. Except in identified areas like 2nd avenue west, downtown, etc., snow is not trucked away. Grading streets make driving easier but the snow storage makes the roads narrower.
- Snow ridge on your driveway: Every effort is made to ensure that windrows are not left on driveways. If a windrow is greater than 6 inches, crews will return to have it removed. You can report it on the Roadways Concern form. Please note that a loader follows the grader operator to remove windrows. Please allow some time before reporting the issue to ensure the second operator has time to clear the driveway.
- Cul-de-sacs - Snow is often piled in the centre of a cul-de-sac or in the middle of a main street to allow for the timely clearing of driving lanes. Crews will return at a later time to truck out the snow.
- Sidewalks - Under certain conditions, where there is a greater volume of snow, one-third of the sidewalk may be used for snow plowing operations. Property owners would be responsible for clearing the remaining two-thirds of the sidewalk in these cases.
