Prince Albert, Sask. – Following review and consultation, the City of Prince Albert has passed a new Taxi bylaw that updates a number of outstanding issues relating to the licensing of taxicabs in Prince Albert including a number of changes that address safety concerns.
“Taxi’s have always been regulated in the City. The new bylaw clarifies some of these regulations and has added requirements aimed at making taxi’s safer for both passengers and drivers,” said Mayor Greg Dionne. “We have also added some regulations that ensure protection of the consumer.”
Passengers are asked to take note that the following requirements are in effect and that any violation can be reported to the City’s Bylaw Enforcement Unit at (306) 953-4222.
Taxi’s not already doing so must:
- Have contact information for the Taxi Broker and Bylaw Enforcement is displayed within the taxi for the public to report complaints or bylaw infractions.
- Not have advertising material covering the windows or obstructs visibility of the interior;
- Have an in-car camera mounted on the inside of the vehicle that fully shows the interior of the vehicle;
- Have a sealed meter to accurately charge rates for distance travelled (rates are now set in the bylaw)
Taxi Brokers not already doing so must:
- Implement a complaint system that maintains a process to promptly investigate and respond to complaints from the public, establish a process to document complaints and provide those details upon request by the City.
- Implement a record keeping system to keep record of every car dispatched and retained for 12 months
“With these regulations in place, we have a system that we can enforce,” added Dionne. “If a member of the public is concerned about a Taxi or Taxi Broker violating one of these rules, they can now contact our Bylaw Enforcement Unit to investigate.”
