An annual tradition in the City of Prince Albert, the Playground Program, returns soon for 5 to 12 year olds. The Playground Program will be offered in 10 locations from July 4th until August 19th. The Kinsmen Park location operates 7 days-a-week and will begin this coming weekend, July 2nd and 3rd from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. in that location only
Last year the Playground Program introduced a site at the Alfred Jenkins Field House that was very popular and returns this summer. Many of the locations offer spray parks including Kinsmen Park, Crescent Acres, Midtown, West Hill, Miller Hill, Lions Park and Westview. The Crescent Heights location will also feature a spray park when it is completed later this summer. The tenth location is Hazeldell which features a paddling pool.
All 10 locations are staffed by two highly trained playground supervisors. All locations operate Monday to Thursday from Noon to 5:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Kinsmen Park location also operates Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Playground Program offers a variety of activities including science, arts, recreation, literacy, drama and more. Leaders have each day’s activities planned out in advance with certain theme days throughout the summer.
A special feature of the Playground Program introduced in 2021 returns this summer: Inclusive Playground Days at the Alfred Jenkins Field House Playground. Utilizing the specially designed equipment for children with ability challenges, the AJFH playground will be used exclusively by these children on Tuesday, July 12, Tuesday, July 26 and Tuesday, August 9. The time this year will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. each day to host the event in cooler temperatures.
A special guest will attend the July 26th event, as Prince Albert Paralympic athlete Brittany Hudak will take time out from her training to be part of the Inclusive Playground Day. The 3-time Paralympian is coming off a double-medal performance at the Beijing Paralympics in Nordic skiing this year.
KidzFest returns to Kinsmen Park Thursday, July 21st from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. as produced by the Playground Program leaders. Thanks to the support of a grant from the Northern Lights Community Development Corporation, Kinsmen Park will be full of fun and games all afternoon! There will be face painting, balloon animals, dunk tank, crafts, mini golf, a photo booth, over ten interactive games and stage entertainment throughout the afternoon. Food and drink will be available for a nominal charge.
Another special event hosted by the Playground Program is Into the Woods Day Thursday, August 11th in Little Red River Park. With the support of a Parks for All grant from the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association, Wildernook Fresh Air Learning will lead Playground Program participants through a fun and educational day at Little Red. Children will be bussed free of charge from different Playground Program locations to Little Red where they will explore the park and learn about nature with demonstrations, walks and interactive programs designed by Wildernook. Elder Liz Settee also will be on hand for an explanation of the importance of nature and Little Red River Park from an Indigenous perspective.
More details will be announced later on this summer, including where and when children can pre-register for Into the Woods Day.
Kinsmen Water Park is open ever day this month with Public Swimming from 1:00-7:00 p.m.

David LaRiviere is a mixed media artist of European settler decent who grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. LaRiviere challenges the notion of “border” through large-scale installations and photographs that “offer a safe place to contemplate the decolonization of Treaty Six, the overturning of white suprematism, and other colonial impediments to our survival” (LaRiviere’s artist statement).
Tracy Fehr is a Métis mixed media artist from Manitoba descended from the Red River Settlement (St Boniface, St Norbert, Pembina). Fehr uses textiles, embroidery and found and worn fabrics help her articulate the lived experiences of family and to embody social, cultural and political aspects of Métis life.
Leah Marie Dorion is an interdisciplinary Métis artist raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. A teacher, painter, filmmaker and published writer, Dorion views her Métis heritage as providing her with a unique bridge for knowledge between all people. This exhibition is curated by our summer Collections Assistant, Milo Adair, and will feature 36 artworks from our permanent collection; these works were generously gifted to the Mann Art Gallery in 2015 by Dorion.
Keep on Going (Frank and Vic Cicansky)
Until August 23
Curated and organized by the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery with funding assistance from the City of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan Arts Board, SaskCulture, Saskatchewan Lotteries, and the Canada Council for the Arts. This exhibition is toured through OSAC’s Arts on the Move program.
This exhibition features the paintings, sculptures and craft objects of folk artist, Frank Cicansky, in dialogue with the ceramics and sculptural work of his son, internationally renowned artist, Victor Cicansky. The presentation of these artists’ works together offers an opportunity to consider the shared values, creative drives and narratives of memory, place and origin that inform both of their artistic practices. Together these works reflect a sincere and compelling response to place, offering immigrant narratives of first and second-generation settler Canadians in southern Saskatchewan, while also exploring the influential connections between our province’s folk art and funk art genres.
There are four awesome art camps through the Mann Art Gallery this summer! Thank you to Community Initiatives Fund and the Community Grant Program (SK Lotteries and City of Prince Albert) for funding these art camps. Register here.
