Frequently Asked Questions

  1. I have a water account for my current address and will be moving to another address in PA.

Call or visit City Hall. Two pieces of ID will be required, one of which must include a photo. You will be charged a $15.00 non-refundable service fee for the new address.
Renters will again have to pay a $150.00 refundable deposit for the new address. The $150.00 refundable deposit for your previous address will be applied to the final bill for that property and if a credit remains on your account, a refund cheque will be sent to you.
If there is an overdue balance from your previous address, it must be paid before service can be set up at your new address.

  2. I have a water account for my current address and will be moving out of the PA area.

    See Open / Close Account.

  3. The water coming out of my taps is discoloured/has a bad odour.

    You can either:

    • Call the Public Works Department at 953-4900 or
    • Send an email via the Report a Problem page.

  4. My water meter is leaking.

Either you or the city will be responsible for repairs depending on the location of the leak.

    • The city is responsible for leaks coming directly from the meter as well as from where the pipe joins the meter. If this is the case, call the water department at 953-4340.
    • The homeowner is responsible for all other leaks and repairs. This includes leaks at the main shut off valve.

  5. I need to shut off the water supply to my house temporarily.

Please call the water department at 953-4340 and give them one day's notice. The charge will be as follows:

    • June 1 to October 31 - $25.00
    • November 1 to May 31 - $75.00

PLEASE NOTE that shut offs are not done on the last working day of the week.

  6. How do I install remote wire for a water meter?
    1. Use 'doorbell wire.' 20 guage is preferred since it is thicker and wires do not break when connecting.
    2. The remote wire is run with the electrical wire for the home and placed in the floor joists.
    3. The wire is to be run towards the front of the house. The City service person will connect this wire to the remote pad when installing the water meter. Approximately two feet of wire should be fed through the drilled hole at a location in the front that is clear of snow in the winter. PLEASE GIVE EVERY EFFORT not to place water meter in the back yard so that meter readers are not forced to deal with yards full of snow or dogs.
    4. Leave about two feet of wire by the meter. The wire is not to be attached to the meter since the City service person will complete this when he or she arrives to install the meter.
