Planning

The Planning Division is responsible for the growth and development of Prince Albert.  The Division addresses land-use issues relating to urban development, zoning, housing and heritage.

The Division processes and approves applications for subdivision, permitted and discretionary-use development and zoning bylaw amendments as well as coordinates land use to ensure that long-term planning objectives are considered.

Planning Policies
This division develops and oversees several policies that regulate City business related to Economic Development and Planning including condominium conversions, street naming and file searches.

Planning and Development Permits
To ensure compliance with the City of Prince Albert's Zoning Bylaw and Planning Policies, the Planning Division requires certain permits to be completed and approved before work can begin.

This page supplies application forms relevant to the Department of Economic Development and Planning, some of which include development permits, sign permits, condominium conversions, building permits, subdivisions, development appeals and zoning bylaw amendments.

This contains a list of all permits, licenses and services that are provided through the Department of Economic Development and Planning as well as the associated fees.

Garage Sale Regulations
The City of Prince Albert has a Garage Sale Bylaw regulating the number of garage sales that a property owner can hold in a year as well as other issues such as advertising for garage sales. Long-Term Plans and Reports
The Planning Division is responsible for developing critical planning documents that will be used to guide decisions on how Prince Albert will be designed in the future.  This includes specific neighbourhood plans for the Downtown Core and the West Hill as well as a draft of the city-wide Community Plan known as Plan Prince Albert.

Zoning Bylaw
The zoning bylaw regulates the use of land within the City limits in order to protect the health, safety and welfare of its residents.  This provides the framework for all developments as well as information regarding the Zoning Regulations within Prince Albert. You can view maps that indicate zoned land use areas both for the city as a whole as well as by community.

Building and Zoning Compliance Letters
The city can provide building and zoning compliance letters that confirm whether a property meets certain building and zoning requirements.

Decks, Sheds and Fences
Guidelines for building decks, sheds and fences (pdf) provide diagrams for the proper placement of these structures on your property.

Municipal Heritage Sites
The City recognizes the importance of commemorating and protecting significant heritage and historical buildings and sites. Over the years, buildings have been designated as heritage properties through the adoption of bylaws in accordance with the Heritage Property Act.

Municipal Heritage Award
Through this award program the City formally recognizes the value of preserving our heritage and honours those buildings that foster pride in Prince Albert's history.

Canadian Institute of Planners' 2005 Award for Planning Excellence - Social Planning
In 2005, the Prince Albert Community Action on Homelessness and Housing received the Canadian Institute of Planners' (CIP) 2005 Award for Planning Excellence (Social Planning category).  The Community Action Plan has since been updated by the 2007 Community Action Plan on Homelessness and Housing.
