If you are an organization looking to put up an EVM you
must obtain approval from City Council. To begin, you will need to fill out a permanent sign application and submit it to the Planning Department. You can download an application form from the
Applications Page. Once the Planning Department is satisfied with the application, a report will be forwarded to City Council for approval.
It is within the discretion of City Council to approve or deny the sign.
Before you submit your application, please take note of the following regulations:
- The size must not exceed 11 square metres and the height must not exceed 10.6 metres and must maintain a minimum 1.5 metres of clear viewing area under the sign.
- The sign must be set back a minimum of 3 metres from the nearest street or lane and be located on the subject property.
- All EVM signs will be required to display public safety broadcasts, such as amber alerts, upon request from the City.
- Third Party advertising is not allowed on these signs.
- The brightness and message speed of the sign must be adjustable and must be changed upon request from the City’s Development Officer.
- Signs must not employ distracting graphics such as strobe effects or explosions.
- They may not carry live video feed or any type of audible broadcast.
- Signs may only be fascia signage, freestanding, or roof mounted.
- Only one EVM Sign shall be allowed per site.
- EVM signs are not permitted in residential areas. Billboards are permitted in most of the M1 – Heavy Industrial and M3 – Light Industrial zones. Specific permitted areas for billboards can be viewed on this map. It is ultimately at City Council’s discretion to allow for an EVM sign in a particular area.
Enforcement:
The owner of any sign found in violation of the zoning bylaw is guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction:
- in the case of an individual:
- to a fine of not more than $2,000
- in the case of a continuing offence, to an additional fine of not more than $500.00; for each day during which the offence continues
- in the case of a corporation:
- to a fine of not more than $5,000
- in the case of a continuing offence, to an additional fine of not more than $1,000 for each day during which the offence continues.
