"The quality and capacity of our future population depends on what we do now to support early child development" (Fraser Mustard, 2006). Evidence is converging to suggest that adverse early childhood circumstances such as poverty, family size, broken family and family dissention can increase the odds of generally poor health almost threefold, circulatory health issues by almost eightfold and mental health issues by more than tenfold.
The goals of the Early Childhood Development Pillar are:
- To set the stage for positive developmental outcomes by creating a community development plan that is family-enabling and child-focused.
- To create a strong start in the areas of protection, opportunities and hope, relationship and community to ensure positive developmental outcomes for all children.
The core actions for 2010 include:
- Participate in the Prince Albert Early Childhood Coalition
- Offer Roots of Aggression full-day workshop in May in conjunction with Early Learning and Child Care Month in May as part of a three-day early childhood event in Prince Albert
- Support the care centers that use HIFIS and expand the use of HIFIS to other sites
- Survey child cares to discern their statistics including number of seats and waiting list length
- Introduce Asset Building to Child Care Philosophy and Programs
- Maintain contact with the SIAST Early Childhood Programs through one lecture a year in their first and second year programs
- Maintain a connection with the Council for Early Child Development
- Map the Early Childhood Resources available in Prince Albert
- In collaboration with the Early Childhood Coalition, develop a series of at least six fact sheets to facilitate knowledge exchange in this area
